Physical Education Curriculum

The department offers a broad and balanced Curriculum through all the Key Stages, and examination courses at Key Stage 4 and 5. Also vocational qualifications through the Junior and Community Sports Leadership Awards.

Key Stage 3:

All pupils receive a double, 100 minute, lesson a week and year seven's receive an extra 50 minute lesson.

In Year 7 the students are taught initially in single sex ability groups to facilitate the teaching of the major games, Rugby and Football, Hockey and Netball. They are taught gym, dance, athletics, tennis and fielding games in the same groups. This enables the department to set realistic goals and enables appropriate teaching to specific groups.

In Year 8 the students experience the same activities, Tennis is swapped with badminton, and generally students stay in the same groups.

In Year 9, Trampolining and basketball are added to the range of activities and tennis returns, also students are taught in the fitness room for the first time. At this age the students are generally taught in single sex groups to ensure that ALL students get the best experiences from PE.

All students are assessed at the end of each activity, and this is then used for reports and information at parents evenings, it also helps form the End of Key Stage Level (End of Year 9).

Key Stage 4:

In Year 10 the students have chosen options therefore will find themselves working with "new" students". Students are given more ownership of the subject, they are offered 2 choices of activity that they will study in depth over the next two years, a winter and summer activity. Examples include: Football, Hockey, Basketball, Netball, Cricket, Tennis, Trampolining. The popular choices are offered in both the summer and winter to allow maximum opportunity to experience your 1st choice! Students will be expected to undertake roles within the lesson, that of the coach, official, manager and plan then lead sessions.

Students also follow a core of activities which include: Introduction to the Junior Sports Leaders Award, where they will experience different roles withinn sport. Trampolining, Games (the major games dependant of group), Active Life styles - were students get to experince activities that they may not have tried before, examples include: golf, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee. Fitness, were students will undertake a series of fitness test prior to developing a training program tailored to the indivudals needs.

In Year 11 the students continue with their option choices from Year 10 and also can opt to complete the JLSA course that they started. Again the expectation is that they take ownerships of the lessons.
